Finally we’ve had some sunny weather, so Richard has been shearing the ewes and tups. Although fleeces aren’t worth much nowadays, we shear the sheep for their welfare and health; it helps stop them from overheating and reduces the chances of parasite infections. If we didn’t remove the wool, the sheep would be at risk of flystrike, whereby blowfly lay their eggs in the fleece, the eggs hatch into maggots and they eat into the skin. We had a minor stoppage when Richard’s trusty old shears broke down (typically after just having had them serviced!) but thanks to Horner Shearing a new set were quickly dispatched so we didn’t lose too much time. We’ll be taking some of our fleeces to the Lincolnshire Show next month, and hopefully we’ll win some prize money and rosettes again!

At out last open weekend in May we had new season spring lamb ready. We’ll be taking orders for spring lamb and Berkshire pork for our June opening which will be on 27th and 28th (9am til 1pm both days). Unfortunately we’ve taken the decision to stop producing chickens. I’ve had a lot of messages from our loyal customers pleading with us to keep doing them, but there’s just so much work involved in producing them that we’re just sticking with lamb and pork for now (which is more than enough work for Richard!).

We look forward to seeing you all in June, as always please try to get your orders in to us as early as possible.
